An eyelid lift is used to correct eyelids that droop due to age or genetics and form drooping eyelids or bags under the eyes. Eyelid correction is performed surgically and can correct either only the upper eyelid, only the lower eyelid, or both eyelids in one combined procedure. The removal of dark circles is also possible as part of an eyelid lift.

What is the procedure for an upper eyelid lift?

An upper eyelid lift takes care of droopy eyelids, which can be corrected by removing excess skin, fatty tissue, and muscle tissue. An upper eyelid lift is especially considered when drooping eyelids interfere with the field of vision. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and takes about one hour. To remove excess tissue, an incision is made in the eyelid fold. The excess skin is removed through this incision. Likewise, the fatty tissue can be reduced. The edges of the wound are sutured so that the skin of the eyelids is lifted without being under tension. If only the upper eyelid is to be corrected, this completes the eyelid correction. Now an additional lower eyelid lift can be performed. If only the upper eyelid is to be corrected, the eyelid correction is completed.

What is the procedure for a lower eyelid lift?

A lower eyelid lift is performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia and takes about one hour. The aim of the lower eyelid lift is to remove fat deposits under the eyes, which are responsible for the typical bags under the eyes, and to tighten the skin. This is done with the help of an incision, accessing the subcutaneous tissue. The incision runs along the lower eyelid directly under the lash line. Similar to the upper eyelid lift, a scar created in this way can be optimally concealed later, as it sits in the natural eyelid crease. The surgeon removes excess fatty tissue through the incision. The edges of the wound are sutured with very thin material. Mini plasters are used to fix the wound.

What is the procedure for removing dark circles?

Eye circles are caused by lack of sleep, stress, and alcohol consumption, but can also be genetic, are often characterized by deep furrows and dark discoloration of the skin. Eye circles can also be removed as part of an eyelid lift. During a lower eyelid lifting, where bags under the eyes are removed, dark circles under can be corrected at the same time. Removing fatty tissue under the eye and tightening the skin effectively reduces dark circles. An alternative to the surgical removal of dark circles as part of eyelid correction is the injection of dark circles with various fillers. With the help of hyaluronic acid or the patient’s own fat, dark circles can be plumped up and reduced. This form of eye-ring removal is non-invasive and requires only the injection of various substances. Hyaluronic acid is mainly used in wrinkle treatment and has a plumping effect making the skin radiant. Previously extracted and prepared autologous fat during a small liposuction procedure can also be used to plump up fine lines. Unlike hyaluronic acid, it is a filler substance that remains permanently in the body and is not broken down.

What should be considered after an eyelid lift?

The patient can leave the clinic a few hours after the eyelid lift. About 5-7 days after the eyelid correction, the stitches are removed. Slight swelling and bruising around the eyes is normal and subsides after a few days. Already about one week after the eyelid correction, the patient is fully socially fit again, regardless of whether the upper and lower eyelid correction were performed separately or whether it was a combined eyelid correction.
